TOMORROW: We Want Dignity: VT Immigrant Worker’s Organize for Human Rights

from Migrant Justice/Justicia Migrante:

Join farmworkers and organizers from Vermont-based human rights organization Migrant Justice for a stop on its “Human Rights Cannot Wait Tour.” Workers will inform the public about the reality of labor and housing conditions dairy workers face in the dairy industry and will share their campaign to ensure that Ben & Jerry’s–one of the largest purchasers of Vermont milk, known by many for its professed progressive values–follows through on its commitment to protect the fundamental human rights of dairy workers in its supply chain by signing the “Milk with Dignity” agreement. The tour will build support for a national day of action on October 5th calling on Ben & Jerry’s to practice what it preaches by signing the Milk with Dignity agreement!

Background:

Over two years ago now Ben & Jerry’s publicly committed to source its milk in compliance with Vermont dairy workers’ human rights by joining the Milk with Dignity Program–a worker-led initiative modeled after the Coalition of Immokalee Workers world-renowned Fair Food Program. But two years have passed, and despite broad public support and pressure, Ben & Jerry’s has still not joined the program!

Further, over the past year during the Milk with Dignity campaign MJ farmworker leaders and organizers have been surveilled, targeted and arrested by ICE in an apparent campaign cracking down on the organization’s successful history of limiting ICE’s reach into Vermont communities. But neither ICE nor Ben & Jerry’s is putting the freeze on Vermont immigrant worker’s organizing efforts.

So, Migrant Justice farmworker members and organizers are hitting the road for the big Human Rights Can’t Wait Tour this September. From Vermont to New York City, to Boston, to DC and Philadelphia along the 1000 + mile tour route, workers will be informing the public exactly what’s inside that pint of Ben & Jerry’s when it comes to human rights conditions for dairy workers. The tour will culminate in a national day of action on October 5th calling on Ben & Jerry’s to practice what it preaches by signing the Milk with Dignity agreement!
