Update: Middblog interviewed some of the students present at the meeting about what went down that morning.
On Saturday morning at 8AM, seven students will have 45 minutes to present a case for the divestment of Middlebury’s endowment from fossil fuels and weapons industries to the Board of Trustees at their tri-annual meeting. In case you’ve been living in a hole in Ross, divestment has been a really big deal on campus, and this is a sort of climax to it all.
Although only those seven will be allowed in the boardroom, students will be organizing outside Old Chapel fifteen minutes before the meeting to show solidarity with the Seven (Teddy Smyth ’15, Jeannie Bartlett ’15, Laura Berry ’16, Nathan Arnosti ’13, Craig Thompson ’13.5, Fernando Jimenez Sandoval ’14 and Kristina Johansson ’14). They are calling it a Board of Trustees Divestment Wake-Up Assembly. It’s super early, but they want as many people to join as possible. According to their fb page:
Many of us heard Bill McKibben’s message at ‘Midd Does the Math’ and many of us have been following the divestment dialogue on campus — this is one 15-minute chance to show that you have woken up to the necessity of divestment and are ready for the Board to do the same.
Come in your pajamas! Come in your ski clothes! Come in your anything! We need to show the Board that there are more than seven students at this school who care.
